What Our Patients Say

My daughter, Morgan, had been very sick every winter since she started school.  She would have strep throat on average about 4-5 times a year and just as many sinus infections each year.  Our pediatrician finally sent us to an ENT.  During the work-up to have her tonsils removed, a CT scan showed she had a chronic sinus infection.  This needed to be cleared up before she could have the surgery for her tonsils.  She was put on multiple antibiotics, but nothing would clear the infection.  While on vacation, she developed vomiting and massive bloody diarrhea from the antibiotics.  This took two visits to the emergency room and months of recovery.  I had never seen my child so sick.  I could not bring myself to take her back to the ENT.

One day I happened to hear Dr. Scoma at a workshop giving his opinion on antibiotics.  He compared the body to a clean and dirty trash can.  If you have not heard him talk about this, I recommend you ask him because it really allowed me to understand what antibiotics where doing to my daughter’s body.  I was able to get a business card and emailed him the next day about my daughter.  He saw us right away and told me what he would be able to do for my daughter.  After examining her, he asked that we give him six weeks and if we didn’t see any improvement we could leave after six weeks.

We made a very long drive (about 45 minutes one way) twice a week (in rush hour traffic) for six weeks.  I could not wait until the six weeks were up.  I was so tired of all that driving each week.  In my mind, I knew six weeks were all we were going to give him.

Well, as you guessed, I was wrong.  After six weeks were up, I noticed Morgan’s health improve so much that we continued to see Dr. Scoma.  And now I am proud to say that Morgan had strep throat only one time instead of her usual 4 or 5.  And when she was diagnosed, we took her in to see Dr. Scoma for an adjustment and she recovered so much faster than usual.  She has improved in so many different ways.  She is growing more.  She does not have the numerous bowel problems she usually had.  Her performance and stamina in karate have tremendously improved (just look at the picture) and her overall health is much improved.  Dr. Scoma even helped my older son excel in his karate performance as well.

Dr. Scoma is truly here to help people and I believe God put me in the position to hear his talk on antibiotics.  Don’t ever think that Chiropractic cannot help with a problem.  If Dr. Scoma cannot help you, he will see to it that someone will help you.  Not only have we found a great doctor, we have found a wonderful friend.

Thank you Dr. Scoma for all you do,
Nancy and Morgan L.

I feel very fortunate to have met and received such excellent care from your chiropractic and neuromuscular services.  Since visiting your office two months ago, I have finally progressed to a lifestyle that I can enjoy.  It feels incredible to wake up and feel energetic and able to pursue daily and extracurricular activities as I had in the past.  Recently, I began running, playing volleyball and softball competitively again.  Furthermore, I would like to thank you for my initial visit in which you took quality time to thoroughly evaluate my problem.  I truly appreciate your patience and caring nature.  I feel each of my visits have remained consistently thorough and focus on my individual needs.  I look forward to a full recovery with an aligned spine and healthy body to last many years.  Thank you for all that you have done to help me. ~Alexis M.

Photo of M E Scoma Ten years ago something happened that changed my life forever.  I was working as a flight attendant for a major airline.  For many years, I had experienced many painful headaches.  At times, the pain in my head was so intense that I found it hard to move or think, they would cause me to want to just lay down with my eyes closed.  In my case, they came on suddenly and lasted from hours to days.  I even tried over the counter medication which seemed to numb the pain at first but sometimes they didn't help at all.  And they weren't solving the problem.  The headaches would come back again and again.  Then one day at a friend's wedding, I met a young chiropractor who was a student  intern.  When I told him my story, he convinced me to give chiropractic care a try.  We met at Life University's out-patient clinic.  He then examined me, took some x-rays and showed me what he had found and explained how to fix it.   He relaxed my neck muscles and gave me my first adjustment.  Much to my surprise, the adjustment didn't hurt, it actually felt good.  And more importantly, I got relief!  In fact, my headaches nearly stopped completely just after the first week. It worked so well - I married him!  Thanks honey!     ~M.E. Scoma

I am writing to express my gratitude for all you have done for me and my 73 year old body.  You may recall that about three years ago a surgeon recommended I have back surgery because of the severe pain I was experiencing due to deteriorating spinal discs.  Instead of surgery, I opted for chiropractic.  I still have the deteriorated discs, but I am virtually pain free since making that decision, thanks to your careful and caring attention.  ~Bea V.

I wanted to write this letter to express my thanks to you for all you have done for myself, and my kids.  I appreciate the professional manner in which you treat each of us, and the excellent chiropractic care we are receiving.  We look forward to our improved level of health under your care.  On behalf of me and my family, we thank you very much.  ~Janet H.

I had constant pain and numbness in my left arm and across my neck and shoulder for about a year and a half.  Even after Motrin, Vioxin and 2 cervical epidural steroid injections, nothing gave me relief.  My friend Esther referred me to Dr. Scoma and now I am about 90% improved since starting my treatments.  He is friendly and willing to answer any questions I have.  ~Phyllis D.

I was having back pain and weak legs.  For 3-4 months, I could not stay on my feet for too long without pain.  Dr. Scoma did a really good job.  Every time I walked into the office I felt relaxed.   ~Vitali V.

I had severe back pain.  Raising my hands above my head was a big problem or getting up in bed or standing for a while all gave me a lot of pain.  I was given pain pills and later on went to see Dr. Scoma for treatment.  I really felt welcome and the treatments are very comfortable and effective.  I do feel much much better than  before.  The adjustment and massage are fantastic with a warm touch.  ~Margaret Q.

I was having low back pain shooting down my legs, sharp neck pain and throbbing headaches all for 6 months.  I tried Ibuprofen,  muscle relaxers and went to the hospital 2 times and the pain got worse.  After seeing Dr. Scoma, I have no pain, I can work longer without pain and my headaches are gone.  I give him a 10!   ~Trenis W.

A few years ago, I was not so sure about chiropractic care.  Sure, I felt better after being adjusted from time-to-time; however, not the believer that I am today.  I suppose I had to go through a “fire” to learn its value when it comes to healing.  That “fire” was getting hurt…like “breaking your neck” hurt!  I was broken, confused, and really scared about my wellness in the future.  Dr. Scoma and his office guided me through my recovery…he is now one of my heroes and this is my story:

A couple of summers ago, I went with a friend to his parent’s mountain house.  After driving most of that evening, we arrived at the property quite late.  My friend grabbed his things and went up to the house to unlock the door and turn on the lights.  After collecting my own things, I followed shortly after him.  With bags-in-hand, I headed toward the house in the moonlight, on what I thought was a clear path.  I was mistaken…what appeared to be a dry plant bed, actually was a six-foot stairwell down to a cellar.  Falling in, without warning…six feet, with my bags and all, flat on my back.  Unable to get up, and with limited lungpower, calling for my friend’s help…he found me about thirty minutes later.

After an agonizing time in the emergency room, regular x-rays did not reveal any damage.  I was charged a fortune and was told there was “nothing broken” as was sent on my way.  Crippling around to my next destination, the neurologist.  After an MRI, and consultation with the Spinal Specialist, it was determine that I was “dealing with a fractured C-6 vertebra and a broken facet joint in my neck”.  The doctor told me that I needed a “spinal fusion” which is a surgical procedure fusing the C-5 vertebra to C-6…at 37-years old, I was absolutely devastated.

As tears welled up in my eyes, I listened to the doctor yet somehow, in my heart, I knew this wasn’t meant for me.  As I limped to my car, I knew at that moment that everything I felt about homeopathy, eastern philosophy and “the power of positive thinking” would have to come into play in order for me to recover.  The only place I could go next, was to my friend, Dr. Scoma.  I needed to know if my instinct was the right choice.

Consulting with Dr. Scoma was like “an island after treading water for weeks”.  I told him what the Specialist recommended and preceded to tell him how I felt about it.  He never swayed me in one direction or the other.  He just simply asked me “what do you think we should do”?  I replied, straight from the gut, I think we can fix me!  He responded, “I do too”.  He listened, and he already knew.  He just needed to hear me say it before he could get to work.

Well after a lot of ice, deep-tissue massages, regular chiropractic adjustments, exercises, x-rays, bathing in Epson salt and peroxide three times daily…the fracture healed and the chip of facet joint re-attached itself.  With Dr. Scoma’s guidance, I made a full recovery.  Five months later, I am back to my routine of running 12 miles a week and biking 30 miles on weekends…back to the “core” me!

Mind, body and heart are three things that are vital to healing.  I had it right in my heart, but it took the help of a great healer, like Dr. Christopher Scoma, to help me keep “ease” in my mind and to work on my body with me.

Thank you for your concern for other’s wellness.  It saved my healthy life!  ~Theodore W.

Little Henry's Story: An All Too Familiar Scenario
Photo of little Henry

Henry was born using a common routine procedure called a C- Section.  From the time he was delivered, Henry had trouble moving his bowels and was borderline diabetic.  For this reason he was kept in the hospital for an extra 10 days.  Within 4 months of arriving home, Henry began having trouble breathing.  His mother brought him to their pediatrician for help.  Henry was placed on his first of many medications.  By the time Henry came to me he was 16 months old and was suffering from chronic asthma, wheezing, stomach problems, trouble sleeping, chronic congestion with runny nose, chronic cough, chronic swollen lymph nodes, poor appetite, trouble walking, chronic dry mouth, frequent nausea with vomiting, and frequent rash.  He was under medical care and was receiving 5 breathing treatments per day and a multitude of medications.  Henry's mother was taking him to the pediatrician 2-3 times per week and it was recommended that Henry have ear surgery for chronic ear infections.

After reviewing his history and the medications he was on, it occurred to me that several of the medications were causing side effects that were then being treated with more medications. For example, Henry's primary complaint in the beginning was trouble breathing so he was started on a decongestant, but the side effect was rash.  He then was put on an anti-fungal cream for the rash, but the side effect of that was trouble breathing and so on went the downward spiral of Henry's health.  Most of the medications that Henry had taken between 8/19/2005 and 7/24/2006 are listed below.  I say most because his mother stopped filling the prescriptions.  She knew that she had to find an alternative for her son.

Hydroxyzine - orally every 4-6 hours, Singulair - 1 tablet/day, Pediatex - 1/2 tsp 3 times/day, Locoid - cream apply 2 times/day, Carbinoxamine - 1/4 tsp 2 times/day, Pseudoephedrine - 1/4 tsp 2 times/day, Nystatin - 4 times/day, Carbetapent - 1/2 tsp 2 times per day, Guaifene/Dextromethorphane - 1/2 tsp 2 times/day, Desonide - 2 times/day, Metoclopramide - 3 times/day, Amoxicillin - 1 tsp 2 times/day for 10 days, Zantac - 2 times/day, Omnicef - 1/2 tsp/day 14 days,  D-Tann - 1/4 tsp 2 times/day, Tetra Tannate Pedi - 1/2 tsp 2 times/day, Pulmicort - 1 vial in nebulizer every day, Xopenex - 1 vial in nebulizer every 4 hours.  Did you count 18 prescriptions?

After a friend suggested to Brenda that she try chiropractic care, Henry was brought to me for a consultation.  We reviewed Henry's life history and I performed a computerized chiropractic exam.  Henry's test results revealed that several bones in his neck were displaced out of alignment most likely due to birth trauma.  The misalignments were causing tremendous stress to Henry's spinal nerves.  We began a series of gentle chiropractic adjustments, 2 days per week to Henry's neck to restore proper function of his spine and nervous system.  Within 6 weeks, Henry was a new child.  You would never know that he had suffered all those many months the way he did.  Except for an occasional slight cough, all of Henry's troubles cleared up completely.  He was off all of his medication, ear surgery was canceled and it was 2-3 weeks in between pediatrician visits.  Brenda still brings Henry in for a "tune up" twice per month for him to receive the maximum benefits from having a healthy growing spine and nervous system.  In time, biannual visits will keep him on the right track.

Dear Dr. Scoma,

This is just a short note to let you know how much I appreciate the care I am receiving from you.  As you remember, when I started coming to you a couple of months ago, I was in a lot of discomfort.  I couldn’t move my head without experiencing tremendous pain in the left side of my neck.  It was almost unbearable.  When moving around, I tried to keep my head as still as possible to avoid the discomfort I knew was coming.

But, thank God, I started coming to you and due to the adjustments I have been receiving, the pain has greatly reduced.  I can now move my head without wanting to cry.

I can wholeheartedly endorse the level of chiropractic care you provide.  In every way, coming to you has been a positive experience.

With all my thanks,

Lynda W.

Before I met Dr. Scoma, I didn't know I needed an adjustment to my neck and back. But once he checked me out and showed me how weak I was and how one leg was slightly longer than the other one, I decided it was best to go ahead and let him do what was needed. After my session with him, I noticed a tremendous difference in my strength and energy levels from the time I had first walked in his office. All this change happened within a few minutes! One of my passions is reading, and I realized from that day on that I could even read for longer time periods without feeling an ache in my neck and shoulders as I had in the past.

Thank you for making me better, Dr. Scoma!

Kim & FamilyI had injured my neck by lifting up a heavy object. Although I did not feel any intial pain or imobility, the next day after lifting the object I lost complete mobility in my neck. I could not even move my neck an inch. I then kept repetatively overstraining the muscles in my neck because it seemed that any task I did was too much.

At my lowest point, I was unable to get out of bed because I could not hold my neck in an upright position. I was in bed for about 3 weeks. The muscles were in such severe spasm that even sitting or standing up was too hard to do, I could only lay in bed.

After just a couple of visits, Dr. Scoma was able to improve my neck to the point where I could easily hold my neck in an upright position and he helped increase the mobility in my neck. Besides adjusting my spine, he would adjust the soft tissue in my neck to get rid of the muscle spasms.

I am now much better and on the road to a full recovery. I am now almost completely healed. I am so grateful to Dr. Scoma for being able to help me so much in such a short amount of time!

In addition to helping me, he helped our daughter. When our daughter first started day care, she would get frequent coughs and ear infections. We knew that she was a healthy child so we did not want to put her on antiobiotics as we were conerned it would weaken her immune system and make things worse in the long run. We have taken Ruchoma to Dr. Scoma several times for coughing and ear infections and as soon she she gets adjusted by him, her body bounces right back and she recovers almost instantly.

I have been to many chiropractors and I found Dr. Scoma to be one of the most skilled chiropractors I have met. Besides the fact that he was a wonderful chiropractor, he was very easy going, a good listener, encouraging, and he really genuinely cares about his patients wellbeing!

EstherDr. Scoma has been my salvation from a life with pain. I was experiencing incredible shoulder pain and after several doctors, my Rheumatologist told me that it was osteoarthritis. After several medications and cortisone injections, the pain continued to be incredibly debilitating and I was told that I would just have to live with this pain the rest of my life. It went on like that for almost a year. Then a friend recommended I go see Dr. Scoma. After his analysis, he discovered that it was not osteoarthritis but a dysfunction between my shoulder and neck. He began to work on my shoulder, neck and upper back with chiropractic. After several weeks, I felt like I had a new shoulder. All the pain was gone and I was able to go back to the things I love most, cooking and gardening. I recommend to anyone, go see Dr. Scoma, he can save you from a life of pain. Viva, Dr. Scoma. ~Esther

TomMy Neck and Back are Happy Now

I was suffering with neck and lower back pain for over 2 months when a buddy from my church recommended that I see Dr. Scoma. After just a couple of visits I could feel the difference. He explains the problem and how the treatments will work in such a way that makes you feel comfortable. As I watch the other patients leave the office it only confirms my feeling that Dr. Scoma truly cares about the well being of his patients. 5 stars all the way around. ~Tom

Anthony 10 Years Old

Anthony

When Anthony was born, he had torticollis in his neck. His head was stuck looking to the left. After a brief examination, Dr. Scoma discovered that the top vertebrae of his neck (C1) was stuck out of alignment to the right due to stress of birth. Using very precise skill, Dr. Scoma gently pushed the vertebra back into position with just the right amount of pressure and direction. Anthony immediately turned his head completely to the right, then looked straight ahead. He has never had a problem with his neck since. Over ten years of wellness chiropractic care, or occasional tune ups as Dr. Scoma calls it, Anthony is completely drug free. Although he sees his pediatrician for yearly well checkups, he has never needed Antibiotics or any other drug/medication. Anthony is extremely talented, a star athlete and has been awarded for reaching the highest honors granted for Accelerated Reading in his school.

Bradley 5 Years Old

BradleyThree days after Bradley was born, he experienced extreme trouble breathing. His breathing was very labored and loud. Dr. Scoma examined him and discovered that the vertebrae in the upper part of his neck (C2) was stuck out of alignment. With precise skill, he adjusted the vertebrae and it made a loud pop. Immediately, Bradley threw up bloody mucus then let out a loud sigh of relief as his breathing was completely restored. Bradley continued to receive Wellness Chiropractic care and has never needed antibiotics or any other drug/medication. He is very healthy, extremely bright and very creative.
